Every Question Parents and Seniors Ask Before Booking, Answered

Most families arrive at a Swartz Portraits consultation with a list of questions. Some have been researching senior portrait photographers for weeks. Some have friends who went through the experience and still have a few things they want to hear directly. Some have questions they feel awkward asking.

All of those questions are welcome. A family who comes to the consultation prepared is a family who will get the most out of the experience. How long is a session?

A standard Swartz Portraits senior portrait session is up to five hours. That is not five consecutive hours of shooting. It is five hours of the complete experience: travel between locations, outfit changes, lighting setups, the natural time between frames where a senior settles in and becomes genuinely comfortable on camera, and the actual portrait work at each location.

Shorter formats are available, including a four-hour session and a two-hour mini-session. Each format is described at swartzportraits.com/investment. For most families who want a complete gallery that tells the full story of who their senior is, the five-hour session produces the most comprehensive result.

How many locations do we visit?

For a five-hour session, two to three locations is typical. The selection process is about the range of visual environments each location provides within itself, not just the number of different places. I travel up to 100 miles from Spring, Texas as part of the standard session fee, which covers the full Houston metro, the Galveston coast, and significant reach toward the Hill Country.

Do you photograph in all weather?

Yes, with one exception. I photograph in overcast conditions, in fog, in the light rain that Texas produces, and in the heat, with timing planned around it. Overcast is actually ideal for portrait work because it wraps the subject in soft, even light without the harsh shadows and blown highlights that direct sun creates.

The exception is electrical storms or conditions that create a genuine safety risk. If severe weather is forecast, I contact the family to discuss options, which typically means rescheduling at no additional cost.

What about yearbook requirements?

Swartz Portraits produces a yearbook-specification version of the senior portrait at no additional charge for families who need it. The school receives the , or email them in advance, and I will confirm compatibility before the session.

When should we photograph?

For the Class of 2027, the ideal window is August through early October. August gives the most scheduling flexibility and the best timeline for product delivery before the holidays. Fall sessions through October are fully viable and produce beautiful results.

From August 1st, consultation appointments are available Monday through Friday at 4 PM, 6 PM, and 8 PM. Three slots per day, five days per week. The calendar fills in the order consultations are confirmed.

Can parents come to the session?

Yes. Many families make session day a full family event. A parent's presence is helpful for wardrobe management and logistics. The practical guidance I offer is to give the session room to breathe: the moments on camera that families love most at the reveal tend to be the ones where the senior forgot everyone was watching. Trust the process and enjoy the locations.

Can we bring pets?

Yes. Dogs are welcome at most outdoor locations and frequently add a genuine and memorable dimension to a session. Discuss your pet's temperament at the consultation so the day can be planned around it.

How many outfit changes are included?

There is no cap on outfit changes within the session time. For a five-hour session, five to eight outfit changes is typical. The wardrobe planning conversation happens at the consultation, and I point every family to swartzportraits.com/portrait-guide for detailed wardrobe guidance.

What happens at the reveal appointment?

The reveal happens in your home seven to ten days after session day. I set up on your television so images display at full scale. All edited and retouched images from the session are presented. Parents, grandparents, and family members are welcome. After reviewing the images together, we look at product options and the investment framework. Most families leave the reveal with their order complete.

How long until products are delivered?

Products ordered at the reveal are produced by GraphiStudio in Italy. Standard production is six to eight weeks. Products are delivered finished and ready to display: albums arrive bound and complete, wall portraits arrive mounted and ready to hang.

What is the investment?

The investment depends on what your family selects. Session fees begin at $300 for a one-hour studio session and $400 for the two-hour mini-safari. Is a consultation required?

The free in-home consultation is strongly recommended, and it is how the vast majority of sessions begin. It is where we design the session together, look at products in person, and confirm that the experience is the right fit for your family.
